IN COMPAS THE TRUMPET FALLS SILENT, BUT ITS BREATH REMAINS

Death confirmed: September 11, 2026

André Déjean, celebrated Haitian trumpeter, composer and arranger, died on Friday, September 11, 2026. A founding member and creative pillar of Les Frères Déjean, he helped transform the family ensemble into one of the defining orchestras in the history of Haitian compas. Caribbean reporting indicates that he was 75 and died in Florida after a period of illness.

His trumpet did more than decorate a melody. It opened space inside the rhythm, lifted the chorus and gave the music its flash of brass beneath the Caribbean sun. Through Les Frères Déjean and later collaborations, including performances with Nu-Look, André Déjean carried the language of Haitian horns across generations without allowing the instrument to lose its warmth.

Haïti has lost one of the architects of its popular music, but the sound has not disappeared. It remains inside recordings, family celebrations, old dance floors and the memories of musicians who learned how a single breath could become collective joy. Today, the trumpet rests. Somewhere inside the music, however, its final note continues circling home.
